English College Dubai to Sultan Qaboos University Muscat

What a Mission !!!

In ICT today we used Google maps to locate the distance from English College Dubai to Sultan Qaboos University Muscat.

I typed the two schools into the search bar and selected find directions. thsi brought me up a map showing me the major roads to take. It also told me that the distance between the two schools was 345 km.

However this site was limited as it only offered a map, it didnt actually give you directions which you could print out. Another factor which made the site limited was the fact that the English College Dubai was not located on the map so i had to choose a destination close to the school.

Taunton to Altern Towers

A little trip down memory lane :)

Okie so today in class we had to find out how long it would take us to get from my house in Tauton to Altern Towers in Stafford. I basically used http://www.transportdirect.info/web2/ to discover this information.

I typed in where i wanted to leave from and where i wanted to go to and then selected next. this brought me up with the page bellow:

This information told me that if i got the train from Taunton to Stafford it would take me 3 hours and 25 minutes to get there and that the price of a train ticket would be about 51.50 (pounds).

However if i choose to drive from Taunton to Stafford it would take me 3 hours and 9 minutes (151.4 miles).

How E-mail Works ....

How E-Mail Works
Well to be honest i think alot of people get a little confuzzled about this !! its not something we all really care about as long as it does what we want when we want...

To send e-mail, you need a connection to the Internet and access to a mail server that forwards your mail. The standard protocol used for sending Internet e-mail is called SMTP, short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It works in conjunction with POP--Post Office Protocol--servers. Almost all Internet service providers and all major online services offer at least one e-mail address with every account.

When you send an e-mail message, your computer routes it to an SMTP server. The server looks at the e-mail address (similar to the address on an envelope), then forwards it to the recipient's mail server, where it's stored until the addressee retrieves it. You can send e-mail anywhere in the world to anyone who has an e-mail address.

Well now that you know how the e-mail works :)

Although i did enjoy this lessoon i thought it was prettyy rediculous as it isnt rele relevant to ict ... and isnt extending my knowledge, my brain is a sponge but its not soaking up anything ! lol

E to the BOOKS

E-Books

This week in school we have been looking at E-Books i researched two different types E-Books and found out a few things about them, i then compaired them:
The First E-Book:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/2372172/Swimmers-Ear-Magazine-18 (ipaper)

Description – iPaper lets you to publish your brochures, catalogues and other printed material on the internet. Your content is presented in a nice and reader-friendly way that makes it easier for the reader to find his or her way around the material. My E-book is about Skateboarding and by using ipaper the booklet is interesting, helpful and allows readers to print, copy, find and enlarge any text, or specific pages. Ipaper also allows reader to format the page making it bigger, smaller, book like, listed or even a slideshow.

Format – This E-Book is written in a document HTML format

Purpose of E-Book – This E-Book has been created to help skateboarders. The book highlights key facts of skateboarding and why the author loves it so much, giving tips and points for readers to follow. Pictures of companies and designers which support skateboarding have also been included, helping reader decide on styles and designs. The author has also included personal information on his favourite music, brands and styles influencing readers.

Does it fulfil its purpose? – The website uses a new funky format which is easy to use and understand, interesting all readers. The images attract readers and help show how certain things are completed. The book offers a variety of facts and information to suit all users. Readers can easily locate the book, scroll down, change the appearance and find to certain pages or words in the book, which is very helpful. The layout of the book however can be very crowded on certain pages and tends to clutter a page with too much information. The E-Book has simply been uploaded into ipaper allowing readers to access it.

The second E-Book:

Does it fulfil its purpose? – The website allows readers to easily access the series of books; therefore it fulfils its purpose. The text on the page is easy to read and a decent size font, however you cannot adjust this. The pictures are new and up-to-date, keeping readers interested and helping make the book more presentable.

Overall

Overall I prefer the ipaper E-Book as I find it much more appealing. The context is far more interesting and the images used are more creative, over all the book looks better. The ipaper also offers a number of tools which allow us as users to copy, print, share, and find certain parts of the book. The book view can be changed accordingly and there are many ways to locate certain areas, this can be very helpful to readers.
